Concerns about cost are often heard when renewable energy is discussed; things like, ‘solar panels are great for the environment, but I could never afford them…’ or ‘only wealthy people have solar panels.’ Solar energy is a commonly supported cause, but when it comes to cost, it is seemingly a pipe dream for the majority of Americans. Today, there are options to get solar panels installed for no cost with the addition of saving money on energy bills. With these programs, individuals from any socioeconomic class can gain access to renewable energy. Present day solar companies will buy a solar system and install it on your home; you are only responsible for buying the energy produced by the system. They take advantage of the government and state incentives and pass the savings onto you. With these programs, the customer will never pay for more or less energy than their system produces. This is known as a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). However, PPAs are not for every customer. Many customers with a tax appitate prefer to own their system and gain more with the additional benefits of financing.

Inside The Office

To go into further detail, I interviewed CFO of Code Green Solar, John Giolli, to gain a little more insight on PPAs and the benefit of this option. When looking into PPAs versus buying your system out right or taking out a loan, customers should meet with someone who understands the benefits of both. In order to decide which plan is right for you, there are certain attributes to look for. The choice of a PPA opens the door for solar to be available to every person; not only making it affordable, but allowing you to save money. I spent some time talking to John learning about the different programs offered by Code Green Solar.

Emily: What’s the benefit of a PPA?

John: If you go for a PPA you’re going to have a payment for the energy you produce on the system and you’re going to lower your energy costs. That’s really a positive for a PPA – is that it is zero up front and you actually save on energy production and you have a smaller monthly payment.

Emily: You’ve had a lot of experience in different industries, what compelled you to transition into solar and more specifically work for Code Green Solar?

John: It’s important to do things that are beneficial for the planet. It’s great to have the experience where you’re working at a place that’s doing something great for other people and the environment.

Code Green Solar is working to make solar available to all property owners; to provide customers with a plethora of added savings and to aid in preserving our bountiful planet. As John stated, you are left with a feeling of self-satisfaction when you are helping others and helping the environment. When making the switch to solar, you can save yourself money while inspiring others around you to also make the switch to cleaner, renewable energy.
